Dyes are widely used in various industries. However, most industrial dyes are synthetic, and studies have shown health problems caused by synthetic dyes. Consumers tend to be more interested in products that do not include artificial coloring agents. Take the food industry as an example. Several large food companies, including Kraft, Nestle and Hershey, announced their plans to replace artificial colorants with natural pigments in their products. Viablife established an efficient method for the production and purification of indigoidine, a promising natural blue dye. This blue pigment is biosynthesized from two molecules of glutamine and has shown antimicrobial activities. It represents a new natural blue dye that can find wide applications in textile, cosmetics, food, drink, art, pharmaceutical and paper industries.
